Every child’s dreams can be turned into “just a phase” if they are kept from having a chance at attaining them. If they want to be an architect they must study art and math, if they want to be a chef we must allow them to make a mess in the kitchen. The great majority of dancers have their first taste of dance through some kind of recreational program, many under the age of 5, perhaps in a ballet-tap-jazz combo class, or small part in a local community production…Unfortunately, many recreational studios are reluctant to encourage talented pupils to pursue their training goals at schools with more focused programs, falsely touting that they themselves can provide the necessary training.
A student may have fears, about trying a new step, about putting on pointe shoes for the first time, about getting injured, about performing for thousands of people, about introducing themselves to a director. All are legitimate causes for worry…

…taken on the guise of a sport, in that it has been used as a vehicle for students to test their accomplishments…there is a more primal and ancient aspect to dance, one that has been present in our collective psyche since the beginning of humanity itself…
