It’s the Connecting Steps… that connect us.
One of the most prevalent defining attributes of a great artist is technical accomplishment…nothing extra, nothing except the purity of their command of their chosen language of expression. A tenant of that ability in dance artistry comes in the cleanliness and execution of the small connecting steps….the seemingly innocuous transitions between bigger technical elements; no fuzziness around the edges of movements, each position of the legs and feet specifically executed, every inclination of the head perfectly held, every movement of the arms in perfect coordination with the rest of the body. Even the direction of the gaze is precisely choreographed for specific effect and accuracy. Because their ability to speak the language of dance is so accomplished, these individuals possess a total and utter mastery of physical form and through that artistic expression. These artists’ ability to hold communion with their fellow artists, and their audience, the experience of being a part of a performance, either onstage with fellow dancer, or in the house as a spectator, becomes an almost spiritual, transformative experience. This precision of shape, movement, and intention allows one to communicate more clearly.
I can remember vividly exceptional performances where we as dancers were completely wrapped up in the moment of a scene, completely taken into the story and the emotion of what was unfolding around us as if for the first time, even though we knew intimately every step and storyline detail. Or as audience members, we held our breath in rapt emotion as the curtain closed, hesitant to make a sound as it would break the spell that bound us to the emotion of the moment. These moments bind us together in their seeming eternity, yet are gone in an instant. They leave their mark on our hearts forever, and sometimes change our lives by influencing our views of our relationships, politics, love, the world.
That’s the thing about dance that is different from other forms of artistic expression. The connection with the audience is an essential part of the art itself…the exchange of energy between performer and viewer makes them intimately aware of their connection for that moment….and that can never be replicated—no YouTube video or Digital Download can capture that. While they can remind us of the performance, in video there is no lasting impression of that interplay between audience and performer. There exists only the memory of it on the hearts of those who experienced it….and the wonder of those who wished they could have.
Dance is a fleeting moment shared by the artist and the audience and it is this very moment that connects us to each other. It is through connections like these that we are able to reach each other beyond our mundane physical existence …one of the heart and soul. This is what binds us together…..the connecting steps that connect us!
